Beginning Meditation
This class starts students on the practice of quiet sitting. Meditation is practiced to calm and train the mind to focus. Our minds, generally speaking, have on average about 300 to 1,000 words a minute. We have so many thoughts and ideas that it can easily make concentration very difficult. Practicing meditation teaches us to access our mind with clarity. Because our minds race so much and with so much pressure from other sources such as family and work, it is easy to become overly stressed. This is not a modern problem; this is an ancient issue that everyone has to deal with. Stress reduction is an ancient practice. Training our minds to control our thoughts takes time and effort. There are so many things in the world to distract us. Our minds pick up billions of bits of information every second. It can easily derail us from focusing. We have five senses, and each sensory receives enough information to overload a computer in a few minutes. Our brain naturally filters out most of the information so our minds don’t overload with pointless information. We must learn to discover what is filtered and what is perceived. This takes time and effort. This is one of the highest training methods of kung fu. It takes great patience, endurance, and dedication. This sounds complicated, but it is very simple. Meditation is repetition of a single focus. Because it is so simple with one focus, it becomes so difficult; hence it is the highest practice of kung fu training. We always start the class with the Intermediate Qi Gong class. The qi gong practice before meditation is a sort of warm up to meditation. Qi gong opens the qi flow in the body to allow a better, relaxed, and quiet meditation.
